Reporting directly to the General Manager, this is an opportunity to step into a true leadership role where you will influence both the strategic direction and day-to-day performance of our perioperative services. Royston Hospital is Hawke's Bay's leading private surgical hospital, providing outstanding care across a broad range of specialties. With seven operating theatres, we deliver high-quality elective surgery across orthopaedics, general surgery, gynaecology, urology, ophthalmology, plastics, vascular, maxio-facial and Endoscopy.

The Role 

You will provide strategic and operational leadership across our perioperative services, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient and patient-centred care while achieving strong operational and commercial outcomes.

Working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists and multidisciplinary teams, you will lead an experienced perioperative workforce, optimise theatre utilisation and capacity, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and contribute as a key member of the hospital's senior leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, inspire and develop a high-performing multidisciplinary perioperative team.
  • Drive theatre utilisation, operating theatre efficiency and capacity management to maximise patient access and service performance.
  • Provide strong clinical leadership, ensuring the highest standards of clinical governance, quality, accreditation and patient safety.
  • Build trusted partnerships with surgeons, anaesthetists and hospital leaders to support service growth and innovation.
  • Lead workforce planning, recruitment, succession planning and professional development.
  • Monitor and manage operational and financial performance, including labour productivity, staffing costs and departmental budgets.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes, staff engagement and organisational performance.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, regulatory requirements and organisational policies.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and organisational initiatives as a member of the hospital leadership team.

You thrive in a fast-paced surgical environment, enjoy leading high-performing teams, and understand how to balance exceptional patient care with workforce planning, operational efficiency and sustainable business performance.

To be successful in this role, you will bring: 

  • Current New Zealand Registered Nurse Annual Practising Certificate.
  • Significant leadership experience in perioperative services, theatre management or broader hospital operations.
  • Demonstrated success leading large multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of operating theatre workflows, clinical governance and quality standards.
  • Experience improving theatre utilisation, productivity and operational performance.
  • Proven capability in workforce planning, budgeting, labour management and service delivery.
  • Outstanding communication and relationship management skills with the ability to influence surgeons, anaesthetists, and senior stakeholders.
  • A collaborative leadership style with a passion for developing people and building high-performing teams.
  • A commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and delivering exceptional patient-centred care.
